✧ "The Messenger of God ﷺ appointed 'Abd Allah b. Jubayr over the archers on the day of Uhud, and they were fifty men. He said to them: 'Stay in your place and do not leave, even if you see birds snatching us.' Al-Bara' said: 'By God, I saw the women, their anklets showing, their garments loosened, climbing the mountain. When what happened happened and the people were raiding, they moved on. 'Abd Allah b. Jubayr, their commander, said: 'What will you do about the words of the Messenger of God ﷺ?' But they moved on, and what happened happened. When night came, Abu Sufyan b. Harb came and said: 'Is Muhammad among you?' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Do not answer him.' Then he said: 'Is Muhammad among you?' They did not answer him. Then he said: 'Is Muhammad among you?' a third time, and they did not answer him. Then he said: 'Is Ibn Abi Quhafa among you?' They did not answer him—he said it three times. Then he said: 'Is Ibn al-Khattab among you?' He said it three times, and they did not answer him. He said: 'As for these, you have been spared them.' 'Umar could not control himself and said: 'You lie, O enemy of God! Here is the Messenger of God ﷺ, and Abu Bakr, and I, alive. And from us you will have an evil day.' He said: 'A day for the day of Badr, and war is a matter of give and take.' Then he said: 'Exalted be Hubal!' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Answer him.' They said: 'O Messenger of God, what should we say?' He said: 'Say: God is higher and more majestic.' He said: 'We have al-'Uzza, and you have no 'Uzza!' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Answer him.' They said: 'O Messenger of God, what should we say?' He said: 'Say: God is our Protector, and you have no protector.' Then Abu Sufyan said: 'You will see mutilation among the people that I did not order.' Then he said: 'And it did not displease me.'"
