✧ On the Day of the Confederates—or the Day of Uhud—when we met the polytheists, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seated a group of archers and appointed 'Abd Allah b. Jubayr over them, saying, 'Do not leave your place. If you see that we have prevailed over them, or if you see that they have prevailed over us, do not come to our aid.' When we met the enemy and the Muslims routed them, until you could see the women hurrying up the mountain, having lifted their garments so that their anklets showed, they began to turn back, saying, 'The spoils! The spoils!' 'Abd Allah said to them, 'Wait! Do you not know what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed you?' But they went on. When they joined the enemy, Allah turned their faces, and ninety of the Muslims were killed. Then Abu Sufyan looked down upon us from an elevated place and said, 'Is Muhammad among the people?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not answer him.' Then he said, 'Is Ibn Abi Quhafah among the people?' three times. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not answer him.' Then he said, 'Is 'Umar b. al-Khattab among the people?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not answer him.' Abu Sufyan turned to his companions and said, 'These have been killed; if they were alive, they would answer.' 'Umar could not control himself and said, 'You lie, O enemy of Allah! Allah has kept for you what will disgrace you.' Abu Sufyan said, 'Exalted be Hubal! Exalted be Hubal!' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Answer him.' They said, 'What should we say?' He said, 'Say: Allah is higher and more exalted.' Abu Sufyan said, 'We have al-'Uzza, and you have no 'Uzza.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Answer him.' They said, 'What should we say?' He said, 'Say: Allah is our protector, and you have no protector.' Abu Sufyan said, 'A day for the day of Badr, and war has its ups and downs. You will find mutilation among the people that I did not command nor did it displease me.'
