✧ We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the beginning of the day, when a group of people came, barefoot, naked, wearing striped cloaks, with their swords hanging on them—or he said: girded with swords—most of them from Mudar, indeed all of them from Mudar. I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ change because of the poverty he saw in them. He entered, then came out, and ordered Bilal, who gave the call to prayer, and he prayed the noon prayer. Then he delivered a sermon and said: 'O people, fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul'—to the end of the verse. Then he said: 'O you who believe, fear Allah, and let every soul consider what it has sent ahead for tomorrow'—to the end of the verse. 'Let a man give charity from his dinar, from his dirham, from his garment, from a saa' of his wheat, from a saa' of his dates,' until he said: 'even with half a date.' He said: Then a man from the Ansar brought a purse that his hand could hardly hold, indeed it could not hold it, and handed it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then the people followed one another in giving charity, and I saw before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ two heaps of food and clothing, and the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to shine as if it were gilded. And he said: 'Whoever sets a good precedent in Islam, he will have its reward and the reward of those who act upon it after him, without their rewards being diminished in anything. And whoever sets an evil precedent in Islam, he will bear its burden and the burden of those who act upon it after him, without their burdens being diminished in anything.'
