✧ We were at Constantinople, with ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir al-Juhanī in charge of the people of Egypt and Faḍālah b. ʿUbayd al-Anṣārī in charge of the people of Syria. A great row of the Byzantines came out, and we formed a great row of Muslims against them. A man from the Muslims charged at the Byzantine row until he entered among them, then came out to us, advancing, and shouted at the people. They said, “He has thrown himself into destruction by his own hand.” Abū Ayyūb, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: “O people, you interpret this verse in this way, but it was revealed concerning us, the Anṣār. When Allah made His religion mighty and its supporters numerous, we said to one another secretly from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ‘Our wealth has been lost. If only we could stay with it and put it right.’ Then Allah turned back upon us what we had intended.” He said: “Then Allah ﷻ revealed, ‘And spend in the way of Allah, and do not throw yourselves into destruction by your own hands’ [al-Baqarah 195]. The destruction was in staying with our wealth that we had intended. We were commanded to go on military expeditions.” Abū Ayyūb continued to fight in the way of Allah until Allah ﷻ took him.
