✧ “We were in the city of the Byzantines, and they sent out against us a great rank of Byzantines, and a similar or larger one went out to them. Over the people of Egypt was Uqbah b. Amir, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A man from the Muslims charged at the Byzantine rank until he entered among them. The people shouted at him and said, ‘Glory be to Allah! You are throwing yourself into destruction with your own hand.’ Abu Ayyub al-Ansari stood up and said, ‘O people, you are interpreting this verse in this way. This verse was only revealed concerning us, the Ansar. When Allah strengthened Islam and increased its supporters, we said to one another secretly from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: “Our wealth has been lost, and Allah has strengthened Islam and increased its supporters. If only we stayed with our wealth and repaired what we had lost.” Then Allah revealed to His Prophet ﷺ, refuting what we had said: “And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” So destruction was staying with our wealth and repairing it and abandoning raiding.’”
