حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ تَمِيمِ بْنِ طَرَفَةَ

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ عَدِيَّ بْنَ حَاتِمٍ مِائَتَيْ دِرْهَمٍ، فَغَضِبَ مِنْ قِلَّتِهَا وَحَلَفَ أَنْ لَا يُعْطِيَهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ وَلْيُكَفِّرْ يَمِينَهُ "، مَا أَعْطَيْتُكَ شَيْئًا، وَلَكِنْ هِيَ لَكَ فِي عَطَائِي

Translation

✧ A man asked 'Adi b. Hatim for two hundred dirhams, and he became angry at the smallness of the amount and swore not to give it to him. Then he said: 'Were it not that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whoever swears an oath and then sees something better than it, let him do what is better and let him expiate his oath," I would not give you anything. But it is yours, to be deducted from my allowance.'
