  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationThe narration of Shuʿbah is irregular (shādhdh) and weak (ḍaʿīf).

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationIn my view this is a mistake. It is only Ḥujr b. ʿAnbas, from Wāʾil. This comes from Ibn Abī Laylā, for he was poor in memorization (sayyiʾ al-ḥifẓ).

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119
  • al-Bukhari

machine translationThe hadith of Sufyān is more authentic, and Shuʿbah made mistakes in it in several places. He said "from Ḥujr Abū al-ʿAnbas", but it is only Abū al-Sakan. He added ʿAlqamah, yet ʿAlqamah is not in it. And he said "he lowered his voice with it", but it is only "he extended his voice with it".

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationThe narration of Sufyān was given preference because two others corroborated him, unlike Shuʿbah. For that reason the critics were firm that his narration is more authentic.

machine translationShuʿbah erred in saying "he lowered his voice"; it is rather "he extended his voice". The ḥadīth of Sufyān is more authentic than the ḥadīth of Shuʿbah in this matter, and Shuʿbah made mistakes in several places in this ḥadīth, so he said:

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119

machine translationThe ḥadīth of Sufyān in this matter is more authentic, that is, than the ḥadīth of Shuʿbah.

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119

machine translationHe criticized this ḥadīth of Shuʿbah on the grounds that the opposite has been narrated from him.

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119
  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThe ḥadīth masters (ḥuffāẓ) agreed that Shuʿbah made a mistake.

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119
  • Ibn al-Qayyim

machine translationIt is said that he erred in it, and that is the correct view.

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119
  • al-Bukhari

machine translationThe hadith of Sufyān is more authentic than the hadith of Shuʿbah. Shuʿbah made mistakes in several places. He said "Ḥujr Abū al-ʿAnbas", but it is only Ḥujr b. al-ʿAnbas, whose kunyah is Abū al-Sakan. He added ʿAlqamah, but it is only Ḥujr from Abū Wāʾil. And he said "he lowered his voice with it", but it is only "he extended his voice with it".

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119
  • Badr al-Dīn al-ʿAynī

machine translationTo declare a man like Shuʿbah mistaken is itself a mistake, and how could it not be, when he is the Commander of the Believers in ḥadīth. His statement that he is Ḥujr b. al-ʿAnbas and not Abū l-ʿAnbas is not as he said; rather he is Abū l-ʿAnbas Ḥujr b. al-ʿAnbas, and Ibn Ḥibbān asserted this in al-Thiqāt, saying: his kunyah is the same as his father's name. And the statement of Muḥammad that he is called Abū l-Sakan does not contradict his also having the kunyah Abū l-ʿAnbas, since nothing prevents a person from having two kunyahs. As for his statement that he added ʿAlqamah in it, this does no harm, because an addition from a trustworthy (thiqah) narrator is accepted, especially from one like Shuʿbah. And his statement that he said "and he lowered his voice with it", whereas it is rather "and he extended his voice with it".

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119
  • Mubarakpūri

machine translationThere is no inconsistency (iḍṭirāb) in it; rather it is the preponderant report, in reply to the Ḥanafīs.

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationHe declared his hadith authentic (ṣaḥḥaḥa).

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119

machine translationThe author of al-Tanqīḥ criticized this ḥadīth of Shuʿbah on the grounds that the opposite has also been narrated from him, as al-Bayhaqī recorded in his Sunan from Abū l-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Salamah b. Kuhayl: I heard Ḥujr Abū ʿAnbas narrating from Wāʾil al-Ḥaḍramī that he prayed behind the Prophet ﷺ, and when he said "wa lā l-ḍāllīn" he said "Āmīn", raising his voice with it. He said: This narration agrees with the narration of Sufyān.

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119
  • al-Bukhari

machine translationKnow that there is another defect (ʿillah) in the hadith, which al-Tirmidhī mentioned in his al-ʿIlal al-Kabīr, saying: I asked Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl whether ʿAlqamah heard from his father, and he said: He was born six months after his father's death.

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1119
  • al-Bukhari

machine translationShuʿbah made mistakes in several places in it.
