حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا سُفْيَانُ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ عَنْ وَاصِلٍ الْأَحْدَبِ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ جَاءَ حُذَيْفَةُ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ فَقَالَ
أَلَا أُعَجِّبُكَ مِنْ نَاسٍ عُكُوفٍ بَيْنَ دَارِكَ وَبَيْنَ دَارِ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ؟ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ «فَلَعَلَّهُمْ أَصَابُوا وَأَخْطَأْتَ» قَالَ حُذَيْفَةُ مَا أُبَالِي أَفِيهِ أَعْتَكِفُ أَمْ فِي سُوقِكُمْ هَذِهِ وَإِنَّمَا الِاعْتِكَافُ فِي هَذِهِ الْمَسَاجِدِ الثَّلَاثَةِ مَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ وَمَسْجِدِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَمَسْجِدِ الْأَقْصَى وَكَانَ الَّذِينَ اعْتَكَفُوا فَعَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ حُذَيْفَةُ فِي مَسْجِدِ الْكُوفَةِ الْأَكْبَرِ

✧ He said: Shall I not amaze you at people observing iʿtikāf between your house and the house of al-Ashʿarī? ʿAbd Allah said: «Perhaps they are right and you are wrong.» Ḥudhayfah said: I do not care whether I observe iʿtikāf in it or in this market of yours. Iʿtikāf is only in these three mosques: the Sacred Mosque, the Mosque of Madinah, and the Aqsa Mosque. Those who observed iʿtikāf and whom Ḥudhayfah criticized were in the great mosque of Kufa.
