✧ We were sitting in the mosque when a man entered narrating to us: He said, “On the Day of Resurrection a smoke will come and seize the hearing of the hypocrites, and it will seize the believers like a cold.” So we entered upon ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd and narrated it to him while he was reclining. He sat up and said, “O people, whoever knows something, let him speak it; and whoever does not know, let him say, ‘Allāh knows best,’ for it is part of a man’s knowledge to say about what he does not know, ‘Allāh knows best.’ Allāh said to His Prophet ﷺ: {Say: I do not ask you for any reward for it, and I am not of those who pretend} (38:86). I shall narrate to you about the smoke: when Quraysh became obstinate and delayed in accepting Islam, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ supplicated against them, saying, ‘O Allāh, help me against them with seven years like the seven years of Yūsuf.’ Then a famine struck them until everything was destroyed, until they ate carrion and bones, until a man would see between him and the sky something like smoke. That is His saying: {So watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke, covering the people; this is a painful punishment. Our Lord, remove from us the punishment; indeed we are believers} (44:10–12). It was removed from them, but they returned to their disbelief, so He seized them on the Day of Badr. That is His saying: {The Day We shall seize with the greatest seizure; indeed We shall take retribution} (44:16). He said, ‘The greatest seizure is the Day of Badr.’”
