حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ الْأَزْدِيُّ ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ثنا زَائِدَةُ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ قَالَ

أَتَى عَبْدَ اللهِ رَجُلَانِ وَكُنَّا عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ كَيْفَ نَقْرَأُ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ؟ فَقَرَأَهَا عَلَيْهِ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ فَإِنَّ أَبَا حَكِيمٍ أَقْرَأَنِيهَا كَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ وَقَرَأَ الْآخَرُ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ «مَنْ أَقْرَأَكَهَا؟» فَقَالَ عُمَرُ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ «اقْرَأْ كَمَا أَقْرَأَكَ عُمَرُ» ثُمَّ بَكَى عَبْدُ اللهِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ دُمُوعَهُ تَحَدَّرُ فِي الْحَصَا ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّ عُمَرَ كَانَ حِصْنًا حَصِينًا عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ يَدْخُلُ النَّاسُ فِيهِ وَلَا يَخْرُجُونَ وَإِنَّ الْحِصْنَ أَصْبَحَ قَدِ انْثَلَمَ فَالنَّاسُ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنْهُ وَلَا يَدْخُلُونَ»

Translation

✧ Two men came to ʿAbdullāh while we were with him. One said, "O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, how should we recite this verse?" ʿAbdullāh recited it to him. The man said, "Abū Ḥakīm taught it to me in such-and-such a way." The other recited, and ʿAbdullāh said, "Who taught it to you?" He said, "ʿUmar." ʿAbdullāh said, "Recite as ʿUmar taught you." Then ʿAbdullāh wept until I saw his tears flowing down onto the pebbles. Then he said, "ʿUmar was a strong fortress over Islam: people entered it and did not leave. The fortress has now become breached, so people leave it and do not enter."
