✧ Two men disputed about a verse. While we were in that state, ʿAbdullāh approached from the direction of his in-laws. They went to him, and I went with them. They said, "We have disputed about a verse." ʿAbdullāh said to one of them, "Recite." He recited, and ʿAbdullāh said, "Who taught it to you?" He said, "Abū ʿAmrah Maʿqil b. Muqarrin." Then he said to the other, "Recite it." He recited, and ʿAbdullāh said, "Who taught it to you?" He said, "ʿUmar." His eyes brought forth four [streams of tears], and he wept until I saw him take some of his tears in his palm and gesture with it like this. I saw two marks in the pebbles from ʿAbdullāh's tears. Then ʿAbdullāh said, "I do not think any household of the Muslims that was not entered by grief for ʿUmar on the day he was struck is anything but a household of evil. ʿUmar was the most knowledgeable of us about Allah, the best reciter of the Book of Allah among us, and the most understanding of the religion of Allah among us. Recite it as ʿUmar taught you, for by Allah it is clearer than the road of al-Saylaḥīn."
