✧ A man came to 'Umar ؓ and said: "I have come to you from a man who dictates the masahif from memory." He said: 'Umar was alarmed and said: "Woe to you! Watch what you say," and he became angry. The man said: "I have come to you only with the truth." 'Umar said: "Who is he?" He said: "'Abdullah b. Mas'ud." 'Umar said: "I know no one more entitled to that than him. I will tell you about 'Abdullah. We stayed up one night in a house with Abu Bakr ؓ for some need of the Prophet ﷺ. Then we went out, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was walking between me and Abu Bakr. When we reached the mosque, there was a man reciting. The Prophet ﷺ stood to listen to him. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, it is late,' but he nudged me with his hand, saying: 'Be quiet.' He recited, bowed, prostrated, sat down supplicating and seeking forgiveness. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Ask, and you will be given.' Then he said: 'Whoever would like to recite the Qur'an fresh as it was revealed, let him recite according to the recitation of Ibn Umm 'Abd.' So my companion and I knew that it was 'Abdullah. When morning came, I went to him to give him the good news, but he said: 'Abu Bakr beat you to it.' And I never raced him to any good but that he beat me to it."
