✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥah on the day of conquest: “Bring me the key of the Kaʿbah.” He was slow in bringing it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood waiting for him until sweat like pearls dripped from him, and he said: “What is delaying him?” A man hastened to him, while the woman who had the key—and it was thought that he said Umm ʿUthmān—said: “If he takes it from you, he will never give it back to you.” ʿUthmān kept after her until she gave him the key, and he went with it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He opened the door, then entered the House, then came out with the people with him and sat by the drinking place. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ said to him: “O Messenger of Allah, if we have been given prophethood, and we have been given the siqāyah, and we have been given the ḥijābah, no people have a greater share than us.” He said: It was as if the Prophet ﷺ disliked his statement. Then he called ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥah and handed the key to him and said: “Keep it hidden.” ʿAbd al-Razzāq said: I narrated this to Ibn ʿUyaynah, and he said: Ibn Jurayj informed me—I think from Ibn Abī Mulaykah—that the Prophet ﷺ said to ʿAlī that day when he spoke to him about the key: “I have only given you what you bear as a burden, and I have not given you what you will be burdened by.” He means: I gave you the siqāyah because you incur expense in it, and I did not give you the House—that is, they take from its gift. This is the statement of ʿAbd al-Razzāq.
