✧ When the heads of the Azāriqa were brought and set up on the steps of Damascus, Abu Umamah came. When he saw them, his eyes welled up, then he said: “Dogs of the Fire! Dogs of the Fire! These are the worst of those slain under the canopy of the sky, and the best of those slain under the canopy of the sky are those whom these killed.” I said: “What is the matter with you that your eyes have welled up?” He said: “Out of mercy for them, for they were from the people of Islam.” He said: I said: “Did you say ‘dogs of the Fire’ based on your own opinion, or is it something you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ?” He said: “Then I would be very bold. Rather, it is something I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ not once, nor twice, nor three times,” and he counted many times. Then he recited: {On the day when faces will turn white and faces will turn black} until he reached {they will abide therein forever}, and he recited: {It is He who sent down upon you the Book, in which are verses that are precise} until he reached {those of understanding}. Then he took my hand and said: “Indeed, they are many in your land, so may God protect you from them.”
