✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and passed by the house of ‘Uthman b. Maz‘un. He stood at the door of the house and said: “What is the matter with you, O Kuhaylah, that you are so unkempt? Is ‘Uthman not present?” She said: “Yes, but he has not lain on my bed since such-and-such a time, and he fasts all the time and does not break his fast.” He said: “Tell him to come to me.” When he came, she told him, so he went to him and found him in the mosque. He sat with him, but he turned away from him, so he wept. Then he said: “I knew that something about me had reached you.” He said: “Are you the one who fasts all the time and stands in prayer at night, not placing your side on a bed?” ‘Uthman said: “I have done that seeking good.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Your eye has a right, your body has a right, and your wife has a right. So fast and break your fast, sleep and pray, and go to your wife. For I fast and break my fast, I sleep and pray, and I go to women. Whoever takes my Sunnah has been guided, and whoever leaves it has gone astray. For every action has a period of eagerness, and for every period of eagerness there is a period of slackening. If the slackening leads to heedlessness, then it is destruction, and if the heedlessness leads back to the obligation, then it does not harm its doer at all. So take from deeds what you are able to bear. Verily, I have only been sent with the tolerant Hanifiyyah, so do not make the worship of your Lord burdensome upon yourself. You do not know how long your life will be.”
