✧ What brought you? I said, 'Seeking knowledge.' He said, 'There is no Muslim person who seeks knowledge except the angels lower their wings for him, pleased with what he does.' I said to him, 'You are a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and something about wiping over the leather socks after defecation and urination has troubled my heart. Tell me something if you heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us, when we were on a journey or traveling, to wipe over our leather socks for three nights and their days and not to remove them except on account of major ritual impurity, but [we could wipe] from defecation, urine, or sleep.' I said to him, 'Have you heard him say anything about love?' He said, 'Yes, we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition or an umrah when a Bedouin came on his mount until he reached the rear of the people and began calling in a loud voice, "O Muhammad, O Muhammad." It was said, "Woe to you, lower your voice, for you have been commanded to do so." He said, "By Allah, I will not do so until I make him hear." He was a coarse, rough Bedouin. When the Prophet ﷺ heard his voice, he said, "Here I am." He said, "What do you think of a man who loves a people but has not yet joined them?" He said, "That one is with the one he loves." He continued narrating to us until he told me that in the direction of the west there is a gate open for repentance, whose width is a journey of seventy years; it will remain open until the sun rises from its direction, and when it rises from its direction, that is when {no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before or earned good through its faith.}
