al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (al-Tabarani) 7334

✧ Safwan b. Umayyah b. Khalaf al-Jumahi, known as Abu Wahb, came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, on the day of the conquest of Mecca. He delayed him for four months and witnessed the Battle of Hunayn while he was still a polytheist. Then he embraced Islam after that and was martyred in the killing of Uthman.

حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدٌ الْعِجْلُ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْجَوْهَرِيُّ ثنا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ رَجَاءِ بْنِ حَيْوَةَ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ

أَنَّ لِصًّا أَتَاهُ وَهُوَ نَائِمٌ فَاسْتَلَّ إِزَارَهُ مِنْ تَحْتِهِ فَاسْتَيْقَظَ فَأَخَذَهُ فَأَتَى بِهِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَقُطِعَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ أَحْلَلْتُهُ قَالَ «هَلَّا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي بِهِ إِنَّ الْإِمَامَ إِذَا انْتَهَى إِلَيْهِ حَدٌّ مِنَ الْحُدُودِ أَقَامَهُ»

✧ A thief came to him while he was sleeping and stole his waist-wrapper from beneath him. He woke up, seized him, and brought him to the Prophet ﷺ. He ordered that his hand be cut off. He said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have made it lawful for him.” He said, “Why not before you brought him to me? When a case reaches the ruler concerning any of the prescribed punishments, he must carry it out.”
