Safwan ibn Umayyah was sleeping in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and there was a garment under his head. A man came and took it from under his head while he was sleeping. Safwan woke up and followed him, and brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned the matter to him. The Prophet ﷺ ordered that the man be punished. Safwan said to the Prophet ﷺ, "I had not reached the point of wanting it to be severed." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Why didn't you come to me before bringing him?"
