حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ ثنا أَبُو عُمَرَ الضَّرِيرُ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ أَنَّ ثَابِتًا الْبُنَانِيَّ أَخْبَرَهُمْ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى أَنَّ صُهَيْبًا قَالَ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُحَرِّكُ شَفَتَيْهِ بِشَيْءٍ فِي أَيَّامِ حُنَيْنٍ إِذَا صَلَّى الْغَدَاةَ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَا تَزَالُ تُحَرِّكُ شَفَتَيْكَ بِشَيْءٍ بَعْدَ صَلَاةِ الْغَدَاةِ وَكُنْتَ لَا تَفْعَلُهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ نَبِيًّا كَانَ قَبْلَنَا أَعْجَبَتْهُ كَثْرَةُ أُمَّتِهِ فَقَالَ لَا يَدُومُ هَؤُلَاءِ أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ شَيْئًا فَأَوْحَى الله ﷻ إِلَيْهِ أَنَّ خَيْرَ أُمَّتِكَ بَيْنَ إِحْدَى ثَلَاثٍ إِمَّا أَنْ أُسَلِّطَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَوْتَ أَوِ الْعَدُوَّ أَوِ الْجُوعَ فَعَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالُوا أَمَّا الْجُوعُ فَلَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ وَلَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِالْعَدُوِّ وَلَكِنِ الْمَوْتُ فَمَاتَ مِنْهُمْ فِي ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفًا وَأَنَا الْيَوْمَ أَقُولُ اللهُمَّ بِكَ أُحَاوِلُ وَبِكَ أُصَاوِلُ وَبِكَ أُقَاتِلُ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to move his lips with something during the days of Hunayn when he prayed the dawn prayer. We said, “O Messenger of Allah, you keep moving your lips with something after the dawn prayer, and you did not used to do that.” He said, “A prophet before us was impressed by the large number of his community and said, ‘These will not last,’ I think he said something, so Allah ﷻ revealed to him: ‘The best of your community is between one of three: either I send death upon them, or the enemy, or famine.’ He presented that to them, and they said, ‘As for famine, we have no strength for it, and we have no strength for the enemy, but death.’ So seventy thousand of them died in three days. Today I say: O Allah, by You I strive, by You I attack, by You I fight.”
