حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ صُهَيْبٍ قَالَ

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى الْعَصْرَ هَمَسَ وَالْهَمْسُ فِي قَوْلِ بَعْضِهِمْ يُحَرِّكُ شَفَتَيْهِ كَأَنَّهُ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِشَيْءٍ فَقِيلَ لَهُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ إِنَّكَ إِذَا صَلَّيْتَ الْعَصْرَ هَمَسْتَ؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّ نَبِيًّا مِنَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ كَانَ أَعْجَبَ بِأُمَّتِهِ فَقَالَ مَنْ يَقُومُ لِهَؤُلَاءِ؟ فَأَوْحَى الله ﷻ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ خَيِّرْهُمْ بَيْنَ أَنْ أَنْتَقِمَ مِنْهُمْ وَبَيْنَ أَنْ أُسَلِّطَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَدُوَّهُمْ فَاخْتَارُوا النِّقْمَةَ فَسَلَّطَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَوْتَ فَمَاتَ مِنْهُمْ فِي يَوْمٍ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفًا

✧ When the Prophet ﷺ prayed the afternoon prayer, he murmured. Murmuring, according to some of their statements, is moving his lips as if speaking something. It was said to him, “O Prophet of Allah, when you pray the afternoon prayer, you murmur.” He said, “A prophet among the prophets was impressed by his community and said, ‘Who can stand against these?’ So Allah ﷻ revealed to him: ‘Give them a choice between My taking vengeance on them and My setting their enemy upon them.’ They chose vengeance, so He set death upon them, and seventy thousand of them died in one day.”
