✧ We were a trading people, and the war between us and the Messenger of God had confined us until our wealth was destroyed. When the truce was made between us and the Messenger of God ﷺ, we felt secure in our wealth. I set out with a group of Quraysh heading to Syria, where our trade was. I arrived there when Heraclius had defeated those Persians who had opposed him and expelled them from it, and his great cross was recovered for him, which they had seized. When he learned of that and that his cross had been retrieved, and Ḥimṣ was his residence, he left it on foot, thanking God for what had been restored to him, to pray in Jerusalem. Carpets were spread for him on the road and aromatic plants were thrown on them. When he reached Īliyāʾ and completed his prayer there, with his patricians and bishops of the Romans, the letter of the Messenger of God ﷺ was brought to him with Diḥyah b. Khalīfah al-Kalbī: “In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. From Muḥammad, the Messenger of God, to Heraclius, the great one of the Romans. Peace be upon those who follow guidance. To proceed: Submit, and you will be safe. Submit, and God will give you your reward twice. If you turn away, then upon you is the sin of the peasants.” Muḥammad b. Isḥāq said: Ibn Shihāb said: The bishop of the Christians narrated to me, saying, “I lived to see him in the time of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, and he claimed that he witnessed that affair of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the affair of Heraclius and understood it.” He said: When the letter of the Messenger of God ﷺ arrived with Diḥyah, he took it and placed it between his thighs and his side. Then he wrote to a man in Rome who read Hebrew, mentioning his affair, describing his situation, and the news of what he brought. The man of Rome wrote back to him that he is the prophet we have been awaiting, no doubt about it, so follow him and believe him. Heraclius ordered the patricians of the Romans to be gathered in the hall of his kingdom, and he ordered the hall to be locked upon them. Then he looked down upon them from an upper room, fearing them for himself, and said, “O assembly of Romans, I have gathered you for a matter. A letter from this man has come to me calling me to his religion. By God, he is the man we have been awaiting and whom we find in our book. Come, let us follow him and believe him, and our world and our hereafter will be safe for us.” They snorted with one snort, then rushed to the doors of the hall to leave, but found them locked against them. He said, “Bring them back to me,” fearing them for himself. They were brought back, and he said, “O assembly of Romans, I only said this statement to you to see how firm you are in your religion in this matter that has occurred. I have seen from you what pleases me.” So they prostrated to him and were pleased with him. He ordered the doors of the hall to be opened for them, and they departed.
