✧ That he was in Syria with men of Quraysh who had come as merchants, during the truce between the Messenger of God ﷺ and the disbelievers of Quraysh. Abū Sufyān said: The messenger of Caesar came and took me and my companions until we arrived at Īliyāʾ. We entered upon him, and he was seated in his royal court wearing the crown, with the nobles of the Romans around him. He said to his interpreter, “Ask them which of them is closest in kinship to this man who claims to be a prophet.” Abū Sufyān said, “I said, ‘I am the closest of them to him in kinship.’” He said, “What is the relationship between you and him?” I said, “He is my cousin.” Abū Sufyān said, “There was no one from Banū ʿAbd Manāf in the caravan that day except me.” Caesar said, “Bring him near me.” Then he ordered my companions, and they were placed behind my back at my shoulders. Then Caesar said to his interpreter, “Tell his companions: I am going to ask this man about the man who claims to be a prophet. If he lies, then call him a liar.” Abū Sufyān said, “Were it not for the shame that my companions would report lying about me, I would have lied about him when he asked me. But I was ashamed that they would report lying, so I told the truth.” Then Caesar said to his interpreter, “Ask him how is this man’s lineage among you?” I said, “He is among us of noble lineage.” He said, “Has anyone among you ever said this saying?” I said, “No.” He said, “Did you accuse him of lying before he said what he said?” I said, “No.” He said, “Was any of his fathers a king?” I said, “No.” He said, “Do the nobles of the people follow him or their weak ones?” I said, “Rather their weak ones.” He said, “Are they increasing or decreasing?” I said, “Rather increasing.” He said, “Does anyone of them apostatize out of displeasure with his religion after entering it?” I said, “No.” He said, “Does he betray?” I said, “We are with him in a truce now, and we fear that.” Abū Sufyān said, “I was not able to insert into any word anything by which I could disparage him, except that I feared it would be reported of me.” He said, “Have you fought him and has he fought you?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “How is his war and your war?” I said, “It has been alternating, sometimes favoring us and sometimes favoring him.” He said, “What does he command you?” I said, “He commands us to worship God alone and not associate anything with Him, and he forbids us to worship what our fathers worshipped. He commands us to prayer, charity, chastity, fulfilling covenants, and returning trusts.” He said to his interpreter when I said that, “Tell him: I asked you about his lineage among you, and you claimed that he is among you of noble lineage, and so messengers are sent among the nobility of their people. I asked you whether anyone said this saying before him, and you said no, so I said, had anyone of you said this saying, I would have said he is a man following the saying of one who said it before him. I asked you whether you accused him of lying before he said what he said, and you claimed not, so I knew that he would not refrain from lying against people and then lie against God. I asked you whether any of his fathers was a king, and you claimed not, so I said, had any of his fathers been a king, I would have said he is a man seeking the kingdom of his fathers. I asked you whether the nobles of the people follow him or their weak ones, and you claimed that their weak ones are his followers, and so are the followers of messengers. I asked you whether they increase or decrease, and you claimed that they increase, and so is faith. I asked you whether anyone of them apostatizes out of displeasure with his religion after entering it, and you claimed not, and so is faith when it mingles with the joy of hearts; no one dislikes it. I asked you whether he betrays, and you claimed not, and so messengers do not betray. I asked you whether you fought him and he fought you, and you claimed that he has done that and that your war and his war alternates, sometimes favoring you and sometimes favoring him, and so are messengers, then the outcome is theirs. I asked you what he commands you, and you claimed that he commands you to worship God alone and not associate anything with Him, and he forbids you from what your fathers worshipped, and he commands you to prayer, charity, chastity, and returning trusts. He is a prophet. I knew that he was to emerge, but I did not think he would be from among you. If what I said is true, he will soon possess the place of these two feet of mine. By God, if I hoped to reach him, I would endure meeting him and wash his feet.” Abū Sufyān said: Then he called for the letter of the Messenger of God ﷺ and ordered it to be read. In it was: “In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. From Muḥammad, the servant of God and His Messenger, to Heraclius, the great one of the Romans. Peace be upon those who follow guidance. To proceed: I call you with the call of Islam. Submit, and you will be safe. Submit, and God will give you your reward twice. If you turn away, then upon you is the sin of the Arīsiyyīn. And {O People of the Book, come to a word common between us and you: that we worship none but God and associate nothing with Him, and that none of us takes others as lords besides God. If they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are Muslims}.” Abū Sufyān said: When he finished his speech, the voices of those around him from the nobles of the Romans rose, and their clamor increased. I do not know what they were saying. He ordered us to leave. When I left with my companions and was alone, I said, “The affair of Ibn Abī Kabshah has become great. This king of the Banū al-Aṣfar fears him.” Abū Sufyān said: By God, I remained humbled and convinced that his affair would prevail until God brought Islam to me, though I was reluctant.
