حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ هَارُونَ ثنا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ثنا حَاتِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْجُعَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ السَّائِبَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ قَالَ
«كُنَّا فِي زَمَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَبَعْضِ زَمَنِ عُمَرَ ؓ لَا نَجْلِدُ فِي الْخَمْرِ» حَتَّى عَتَوْا فِيهَا فَجَلَدَ عُمَرُ ؓ ثَمَانِينَ فَلَمْ يُبَكَّتُوا فَجَعَلَ عُمَرُ ؓ فِيهَا ثَمَانِينَ وَقَالَ إِنَّهُ إِذَا سَكِرَ افْتَرَى وَقَالَ الْبُهْتَانَ

✧ “We were in the time of the Prophet ﷺ, and Abū Bakr, and part of the time of ʿUmar ؓ, we did not flog for wine,” until they became audacious with it, and ʿUmar ؓ flogged eighty. They did not stop, so ʿUmar ؓ made it eighty and said, “When he gets drunk, he slanders and speaks falsehood.”
