✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed the fay' which Allah granted at Hunayn from the spoils of Hawazin, and he spread the distribution among the people of Makkah, both Quraysh and others. The Ansar became angry. When the Prophet ﷺ heard of that, he came to them in their dwellings and said: "Whoever is here but is not of the Ansar, let him go out to his mount." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the tashahhud and praised Allah ﷻ, then said: "O company of the Ansar, word of your talk concerning these spoils has reached me, which I favored to certain people to win their hearts to Islam, that perhaps they may bear witness after today, for Allah has entered Islam into their hearts." He then said: "O company of the Ansar, did Allah not bestow upon you faith and single you out for honor and name you with the best of names: Ansar Allah and Ansar of His Messenger? Were it not for the Hijrah, I would have been a man of the Ansar. If the people were to take one valley and you another, I would take your valley. Are you not pleased that the people go with these spoils—sheep, cattle, and camels—while you go with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" When the Ansar heard the words of the Prophet ﷺ, they said: "We are pleased." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Answer me regarding what I have said." The Ansar said: "O Messenger of Allah, you found us in darkness and Allah brought us out through you to light; you found us on the brink of a pit of fire and Allah saved us through you; you found us astray and Allah guided us through you. We are pleased with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad as Prophet. So do, O Messenger of Allah, whatever you will in the broadest of permission." The Prophet ﷺ said: "By Allah, had you answered me with other than this statement, I would have said you spoke truthfully. Had you said: 'Did you not come to us as a fugitive and we sheltered you, as one denied and we believed you, as one forsaken and we supported you, and we accepted what the people rejected?' Had you said this, you would have spoken truthfully." The Ansar said: "Rather to Allah and His Messenger belong the favor and grace upon us and upon others." Then they wept, and their weeping grew intense, and the Prophet ﷺ wept with them and was pleased with them. And they were by what he said to them more delighted and more excellent in their sight than all wealth.
