حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْخَفَّافُ الْمِصْرِيُّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ ثنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ أَخْبَرَنِي السَّائِبُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ
«أَنَّ الْأَذَانَ كَانَ أَوَّلُهُ حِينَ يَجْلِسُ الْإِمَامُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ فَلَمَّا كَانَ خِلَافَةُ عُثْمَانَ كَثُرَ النَّاسُ وَأَمَرَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ بِالْأَذَانِ الثَّالِثِ فَأُذِّنَ بِهِ عَلَى الزَّوْرَاءِ»

✧ The first call to prayer used to be when the imam sat on the pulpit on the day of Jumu'ah during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and Umar. When Uthman became caliph and the people became numerous, Uthman b. Affan commanded on the day of Jumu'ah a third call to prayer, and it was given at al-Zawra'.
