✧ He informed him that when the Messenger of God ﷺ left Makkah as an emigrant to Madinah, Quraysh offered a hundred she-camels to whoever brought him back. While I was sitting in the assembly of my people, a man came and said: By God, I have just seen three riders pass by me; I think it is Muhammad ﷺ. He said: I gestured to him to be quiet: they are only the sons of so-and-so seeking a stray animal of theirs. I stayed for a little while, then I got up, entered, and ordered that my horse be led to the bottom of the valley. I took out my weapons from behind my room, then took the divining arrows with which I sought omens and put on my armor. Then I brought out my divining arrows and drew omens, and the arrow I disliked came out: that I would not harm him. He said: I had been hoping to bring him back and take the hundred she-camels. So I mounted and followed his tracks. While my horse was galloping with me, it stumbled and I fell off. I took out my divining arrows and drew omens with them, and the arrow I disliked came out: that I would not harm him. But I refused anything except to follow him. I mounted my horse, and when the group appeared to me and I looked at them, my horse stumbled with me and its forelegs sank into the ground, and I fell off. It pulled out its forelegs and there followed them smoke like a staff. Then I knew that he had been protected from me and that he would prevail. So I called out to them: Wait for me, for by God I will not harm you, and nothing you dislike will come from me. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: What do you want? I said: Write for me a document that will be a sign between me and you. He said: Write for him, O Abu Bakr. He said: So he wrote a document for me, then threw it to me. He said: I returned and kept silent, and did not mention anything of what had happened until God ﷻ granted His Messenger ﷺ victory over Makkah and he had finished with Hunayn. Then I went out to the Messenger of God ﷺ to meet him, with the document he had written for me. While I was making for him, I entered among a battalion of the Ansar's battalions, and they began prodding me with their spears, saying: Away with you, away with you, until I drew near to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was on his she-camel. I looked at his shin in the stirrup as if it were a palm pith. I raised my hand with the document and said: O Messenger of God, this is your document. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: A day of fulfillment and kindness. So I became a Muslim, and I brought him the sadaqah of my wealth.
