✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave the banner to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and sent him to one of the fortresses of Khaybar. He fought and then returned without any conquest, and he had exerted himself. He said, "Tomorrow I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and through whose hands Allah will grant victory—not one who flees." Then he called 'Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ while he was suffering from ophthalmia, spat into his eyes, and said, "Take this banner until Allah grants you victory." Salamah said: By Allah, he went out at a brisk pace, and I followed his footsteps behind him until he planted the banner in a heap of stones. A Jew looked down on him from the top of the fortress and said, "Who are you?" He said, "I am 'Ali b. Abi Talib." The Jew said, "You have overcome them, and by what was revealed to Musa." He did not return until Allah granted him victory.
