✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave the banner to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and sent him against one of the fortresses of Khaybar. He fought, then returned without any conquest, and he had exerted himself. He said: “I will give the banner tomorrow to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, through whose hands Allah will grant victory; he is not one who flees.” He called 'Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ, who had sore eyes. He spat into his eyes, then said: “Take this banner until Allah grants you victory.” Salamah said: “By Allah, he went out at a brisk pace, and I was behind him, following his tracks, until he planted the banner in a pile of stones. A Jew looked down at him from the top of the fortress and said: ‘Who are you?’ He said: ‘I am 'Ali b. Abi Talib.’ The Jew said: ‘You have overcome them, and what was revealed to Musa.’ He did not return until Allah granted him victory.”
