حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ السَّلَامِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ أَبِي الْبَخْتَرِيِّ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي عَبْسٍ قَالَ

كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ مَعَ سَلْمَانَ عَلَى شَطِّ دِجْلَةَ فَقَالَ يَا أَخَا بَنِي عَبْسٍ انْزِلْ فَاشْرَبْ فَشَرِبْتُ ثُمَّ قَالَ اشْرَبْ فَشَرِبْتُ قَالَ مَا نَقَصَ شَرَابُكَ مِنْ دِجْلَةَ قَالَ قُلْتُ مَا عَسَى أَنْ يَنْقُصَ قَالَ فَإِنَّ الْعِلْمَ كَذَلِكَ يُؤْخَذُ مِنْهُ وَلَا يَنْقُصُ ثُمَّ قَالَ ارْكَبْ فَمَرَرْنَا بِأَكْدَاسٍ مِنْ حِنْطَةٍ وَشَعِيرٍ فَقَالَ أَتَرَى هَذَا فَتَحَ لَنَا؟ وقَتَّرَ عَلَى أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ لِخَيْرٍ لَنَا وَشَرٍّ لَهُمْ؟ قُلْتُ لَا أَدْرِي قَالَ وَلَكِنِّي أَدْرِي شَرٌّ لَنَا وَخَيْرٌ لَهُمْ «مَا شَبِعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مُتَوَالِيَةٍ حَتَّى لَحِقَ بِاللهِ ﷻ»

✧ I was walking with Salmān along the bank of the Tigris. He said: “Brother of Banū ʿAbs, go down and drink.” I drank. Then he said: “Drink.” I drank. He said: “Has your drinking decreased the Tigris?” I said: “How could it possibly decrease?” He said: “Knowledge is like that: it is taken from, and it does not decrease.” Then he said: “Mount.” We passed by piles of wheat and barley, and he said: “Do you see this? It was opened for us and withheld from the companions of Muḥammad ﷺ. Was that good for us and bad for them, or bad for us and good for them?” I said: “I do not know.” He said: “But I know: it was bad for us and good for them. The Messenger of God ﷺ never ate his fill for three consecutive days until he joined God, Exalted is He.”
