✧ I set out when I came to al-Madāʾin, and there was a man wearing worn-out clothes, holding a red hide and rubbing it. I turned, and he looked at me and gestured with his hand: “Stay where you are, servant of God.” I stood still and asked those who were with me: “Who is this man?” They said: “This is Salmān.” He entered his house, put on white clothes, then came back, took my hand, shook it, and asked me about myself. I said: “Abū ʿAbd Allah, you have not seen me before, nor have I seen you, nor did you know me.” He said: “Indeed, by the One in whose hand is my soul, my spirit recognized your spirit when I saw you. Are you not al-Ḥārith b. ʿAmīra?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘Spirits are assembled troops. Those among them that recognize one another in God become close, and those that do not recognize one another in God differ.’”
