✧ He said: I was a man from the people of Jayy, the city of Isfahan. While I was thus, Allah cast into my heart concern about the truth of the heavens and the earth. I went to a man who would not speak to people out of scrupulousness and asked him, 'Which religion is best?' He said, 'What do you have to do with this talk? Do you want a religion other than your father's religion?' I said, 'No, but I would like to know who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and which religion is best.' He said, 'I do not know anyone upon this except a monk in Mosul.' So I went to him and stayed with him. He was straitened in worldly provisions; he would fast by day and stand in prayer by night. I worshipped as he worshipped, and I remained with him for three years. Then he died. I said, 'To whom do you entrust me?' He said, 'I do not know anyone among the people of the east upon what I am upon. You should go to a monk beyond the Jazirah, and convey my greetings to him.' So I went to him, conveyed his greetings, and told him that he had died. I remained with him for another three years. Then he died. I said, 'Where do you command me to go?' He said, 'I do not know anyone on earth upon what I am upon except a monk in Amorium, an old man. I do not know whether you will reach him or not.' So I went to him and stayed with him. He was a man with ample provision. When death came to him, I said, 'Where do you command me to go?' He said, 'I do not know anyone on earth upon what I am upon. But if you live to see a time when a man is heard of who comes forth from the house of Ibrahim ﷺ — and I do not think you will live to see him, though I had hoped to — then if you can be with him, do so, for he is upon the religion. Its signs are that his people will say he is a sorcerer, a madman, a soothsayer; that he eats gifts but does not eat charity; and that at the cartilage of his shoulders there is the seal of prophethood.' While I was thus, a caravan came from the direction of Madinah. I said, 'Who are you?' They said, 'We are from the people of Madinah. We are merchants who live by our trade. But a man has come forth from the house of Ibrahim ﷺ and came to us. His people fight him, and we fear that he may come between us and our trade. But he has taken possession of Madinah.' I said, 'What do they say about him?' They said, 'They say he is a sorcerer, a madman, a soothsayer.' I said, 'This is the sign. Direct me to your companion.' I went to him and said, 'Will you carry me to Madinah?' He said, 'What will you give me?' I said, 'I have nothing to give you except that I will be your slave.' So he carried me. When I arrived, he put me among his palm trees. I would water them as a camel waters, until my back and chest became calloused from that. I found no one who understood my speech until an old Persian woman came to water. I spoke to her, and she understood my speech. I said to her, 'Where is the man who has come forth? Direct me to him.' She said, 'He will pass by you in the morning when he prays the dawn prayer at the beginning of the day.' I went out and gathered dates. When morning came, I approached and brought the dates near to him. He said, 'What is this? Is it charity or a gift?' I gestured that it was charity. He said, 'Take it to these,' and his companions were with him. They ate, but he did not eat. I said, 'This is one sign.' The next day, I came with dates. He said, 'What is this?' I said, 'This is a gift.' He ate and called his companions, and they ate. Then he saw me trying to look at the seal. He recognized that, so he threw off his cloak. I began to turn him around and embrace him. He said, 'What is the matter with you?' He asked me, so I told him my story. He said, 'You stipulated to them that you are a slave. Purchase your freedom from them.' So the Prophet ﷺ purchased him on the condition that he bring them one hundred palm trees and forty uqiyahs of gold; then he would be free. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Plant.' So he planted. Then he said, 'Go and throw the bucket into the well. Then do not raise it until it rises, for when it is full, it will rise. Then sprinkle [the water] at their roots.' He did so, and the palms grew the fastest of growth. He said, 'Glory be to Allah! We have never seen the like of this slave. This slave has great importance.' People gathered around him. The Prophet ﷺ gave him gold nuggets, and in it were forty uqiyahs.
