✧ He spent the night at Salmān’s to observe his exertion in worship. He said: He got up to pray at the end of the night, but it seemed he did not see what he had expected. He mentioned that to him, and Salmān, may God have mercy on him, said, “Guard these five prayers, for they are expiations for these wounds as long as the fatal blow is not struck. When people pray ʿIshāʾ, they disperse into three ranks: among them are those against whom it counts and not for them, those for whom it counts and not against them, and those for whom it neither counts for nor against. A man who seizes the darkness of the night during people’s heedlessness and rides headlong into sins—that is against him and not for him. A man who seizes the darkness of the night and people’s heedlessness and stands to pray—that is for him and not against him. A man who prays then sleeps—that is neither for him nor against him. Beware of excessive striving, and keep to moderation and steadfastness.”
