حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى الْعَنْبَرِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سُورٍ الْعَنْبَرِيُّ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ أَنَا ثَابِتٌ الْبُنَانِيُّ
أَنَّ أَبَا الدَّرْدَاءِ ذَهَبَ مَعَ سَلْمَانَ الْفَارِسِيِّ يَخْطُبُ عَلَيْهِ امْرَأَةً مِنْ بَنِي لَيْثٍ فَدَخَلَ فَذَكَرَ فَضْلَ سَلْمَانَ وَسَابِقَتَهُ وَإِسْلَامَهُ وَذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ يَخْطُبُ إِلَيْهِمْ فَتَاتَهُمْ فُلَانَةَ فَقَالُوا أَمَّا سَلْمَانُ فَلَا نُزَوِّجُهُ وَلَكِنَّا نُزَوِّجُكَ فَتَزَوَّجَهَا ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ كَانَ شَيْءٌ وَإِنِّي اسْتَحْيِي أَنْ أَذَكُرَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ «وَمَا ذَلِكَ؟» فَأَخْبَرَهُ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ بِالْخَبَرِ فَقَالَ سَلْمَانُ «أَنَا أَحَقُّ أَنْ أَسْتَحْيِيَ مِنْكَ أَنْ أَخْطُبَهَا وَكَانَ اللهُ قَدْ قَضَاهَا لَكَ»

✧ Abū al-Dardāʾ went with Salmān al-Fārisī to ask for a woman of the Banū Layth in marriage for him. He entered and mentioned Salmān’s virtue, his precedence, and his Islam, and said that he was asking for their daughter so-and-so in marriage. They said, “As for Salmān, we will not marry him off, but we will marry you.” So he married her. Then he came out and said, “Something happened, and I am too shy to mention it.” Salmān said, “What is it?” Abū al-Dardāʾ told him the news, and Salmān said, “I am more entitled to feel shy than you, for I asked for her hand, but God had decreed her for you.”
