✧ We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ when a man came and said: "O Messenger of God, among the Banu 'Amr b. 'Awf words were exchanged until they threw stones at one another." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "That has long been the case among them. Let us go to them." Ubayy b. Ka'b and Suhayl b. Bayda' stood up with him, and he made peace between them. Then the prayer time arrived, and Bilal gave the call to prayer, but the Messenger of God ﷺ was delayed in returning to them, meaning he was slow. The people said to Abu Bakr: "Go forward (and lead the prayer)." He said: "Do you think that is right?" They said: "Yes." So he went forward. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ came, and the people began clapping. Abu Bakr ؓ would not turn around during the prayer, but when he heard them clapping, he turned and saw the Messenger of God ﷺ. He stepped back on his heels, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him: "Stay in your place." So he moved back, and the Messenger of God ﷺ stepped forward and led the people in prayer. When he finished, he said: "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from remaining in your place when I gestured to you?" He replied: "It was not for the son of Abu Quhafa to stand in front of the Messenger of God ﷺ." Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Why did I see you clapping? If something occurs to someone during the prayer, then glorification (tasbih) is for men and clapping is for women."
