✧ There was fighting between Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf b. ʿAwf, and that reached the Prophet ﷺ. He prayed Ẓuhr and then went to them to reconcile between them. He said, 'O Bilāl, if the time for ʿAṣr comes and I have not come to you, tell Abū Bakr to lead the people in prayer.' When the time for the ʿAṣr prayer came, he called the adhān and the iqāmah, then he ordered Abū Bakr, who stepped forward. The Messenger of God ﷺ came while Abū Bakr was in prayer and made his way through the people until he stood behind Abū Bakr in the row next to him. The people clapped, but Abū Bakr, when he entered prayer, would not turn around until he finished. When he saw that the clapping did not stop, he turned around and saw the Prophet ﷺ behind him. The Messenger of God ﷺ gestured to him to go ahead, and he said with his hand like this. Abū Bakr remained for a little while, praised God for what the Prophet ﷺ said, then he stepped backward. When the Prophet ﷺ saw that, he came forward and led the people in prayer. When he finished his prayer, he said, 'O Abū Bakr, what prevented you, when I gestured to you, from continuing?' He said, 'It was not for the son of Abū Quḥāfah to lead the Messenger of God ﷺ in prayer.' He said, and he said to the people, 'If something alarms you, let the men glorify and the women clap.' The wording is that of the ḥadīth of ʿĀrim.
