حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خُنَيْسٍ الدِّمْيَاطِيُّ ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْبَلْقَاوِيُّ ثنا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُقْرِئُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ حَدَّثَنِي سَهْلُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيُّ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ ذَهَبَ إِلَى بَنِي عَمْرِو بْنِ عَوْفٍ لِيُصْلِحَ بَيْنَهُمْ فحَانَ وَقْتُ الصَّلَاةِ فَجَاءَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ فَقَالَ أَتُصَلِّي لِلنَّاسِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَخَلُصَ حَتَّى وَقَفَ فِي الصَّفِّ مَعَ النَّاسِ فَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ لَا يَلْتَفِتُ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَلَمَّا أَكْثَرَ النَّاسُ التَّصْفِيقَ الْتَفَتَ فَرَأَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وأشَارَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنِ امْكُثْ مَكَانَكَ فَرَفَعَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ يَدَهُ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ ﷻ عَلَى مَا أَمَرَهُ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْخَرَ حَتَّى اسْتَوَى فِي الصَّفِّ فَتَقَدَّمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَصَلَّى فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ «يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَثْبُتَ إِذْ أَمَرْتُكَ؟» فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ مَا كَانَ يَنْبَغِي لِابْنِ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا لِي رَأَيْتُكُمْ أَكْثَرْتُمْ مِنَ التَّصْفِيقِ مَنْ رَابَهُ شَيْءٌ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَلْيُسَبِّحْ فَإِنَّهُ إِذَا سَبَّحَ الْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِ وإِنَّمَا التَّصْفِيقُ لِلنِّسَاءِ»

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ went to Banū ‘Amr b. ‘Awf to reconcile between them. The time for prayer came, so the muezzin went to Abū Bakr ؓ and said, “Will you lead the people in prayer?” He said, “Yes.” So Abū Bakr ؓ led the prayer. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ came while the people were in prayer, and he made his way through until he stood in the row with the people. Abū Bakr ؓ did not turn around during his prayer, but when the people clapped repeatedly, he turned and saw the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ gestured to him to remain in his place. Abū Bakr ؓ raised his hands and praised God, exalted is He, for what the Messenger of God ﷺ commanded him. Then he stepped back until he stood in the row, and the Prophet ﷺ came forward and led the prayer. When he finished, he said, “O Abū Bakr, what prevented you from staying when I commanded you?” Abū Bakr ؓ replied, “It was not appropriate for the son of Abū Quḥāfah to lead the prayer while the Messenger of God ﷺ was present.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Why did I see you clapping so much? Whoever notices something during prayer should glorify God, for when he glorifies, attention is turned to him. Clapping is only for women.”
