حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ ثنا عَامِرُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ قَالَ

سَعْدٌ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي مَسِيرَةٍ وَمَعَنَا شَيْءٌ مِنْ تَمْرٍ فَقَالَ لِي صَفْوَانُ أَطْعِمْنِي هَذَا التَّمْرَ فَقُلْتُ إِنْهُ تَمْرٌ قَلِيلٌ وَلَسْتُ آمَنُ أَنْ يَدْعُوَ بِهِ فَإِذَا نَزَلُوا أَكَلْتَ مَعَهُمْ فَقَالَ أَطْعِمْنِي فَقَدْ أَهْلَكَنِي الْجُوعُ وَذَكَرَ مَا بَلَغَ مِنْهُ فَأَبَيْتُ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ فَعَرْقَبَ الرَّاحِلَةَ الَّتِي عَلَيْهَا التَّمْرُ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَّسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «قُولُوا لِصَفْوَانَ فَلْيَذْهَبْ» قَالَ فَلَمْ يَبِتْ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ يَطُوفُ عَلَى أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَتَى عَلِيًّا ؓ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ أَذْهَبُ؟ أَذْهَبُ إِلَى الْكُفْرِ؟ فَأَتَى عَلِيٌّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَأَخْبَرَهُ بِذَلِكَ فَقَالَ «قُولُوا لِصَفْوَانَ فَلْيَلْتَحِقْ»

✧ Saʿd said: We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a march, and we had some dates with us. Ṣafwān said to me, “Feed me these dates.” I said, “They are few dates, and I do not feel safe that he will call for them. When they halt, you can eat with them.” He said, “Feed me, for hunger has nearly destroyed me,” and he mentioned what he had reached. I refused him that, so he hamstrung the camel that carried the dates. That reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said, “Tell Ṣafwān to leave.” He did not stay that night; he went around among the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, then came to ʿAlī ؓ and said, “Where should I go? Should I go to unbelief?” ʿAlī went to the Prophet ﷺ and told him that, and he said, “Tell Ṣafwān to rejoin.”
