حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَا ثنا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ الْقُرَظِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ أَرْقَمَ يَقُولُ

سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أُبَيِّ بْنِ سَلُولٍ يَقُولُ {لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا} فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ وَأَتَاهُ ابْنُ أُبَيٍّ فَحَلَفَ لَهُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقُلْ قَالَ فَأَتَانِي أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلَامُونِي فَأَتَيْتُ مَنْزِلِي فَنِمْتُ قَالَ كَأَنَّهُ كَئِيبٌ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَتَيْتُهُ أَوْ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ صَدَّقَكَ وَعَذَرَكَ» وَتَلَا هَاتَيْنِ الْآيَتَيْنِ {هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ} حَتَّى خَتَمَ الْآيَتَيْنِ

✧ I heard ‘Abd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salul say: {Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse.} I came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. Ibn Ubayy came to him and swore that he had not said it. Then the companions of the Prophet ﷺ came to me and blamed me. I went to my home and slept in a dejected state. The Prophet ﷺ sent for me, and I came to him—or he said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ—and he said: “Allah has confirmed you and excused you.” And he recited these two verses: {They are the ones who say, ‘Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah’} until he completed the two verses.
