✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Dhū al-Khalīfah in Tihāmah. The people got camels and sheep, and they hurried and brought the cooking pots to a boil. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them and ordered the pots to be overturned. Then he distributed and equated ten sheep with one camel. He said: A camel from among them bolted, and a man shot it with an arrow and stopped it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "These animals have wildness like the wildness of wild beasts. Whatever of them overpowers you, do with it like this." Then Rāfiʿ b. Khadīj came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we fear, or we hope, to meet the enemy, but we have no knives with us. May we slaughter with reeds?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whatever makes the blood flow and upon which the name of Allah is mentioned, then eat, except tooth and nail. I will tell you about that: as for the tooth, it is bone; and as for the nail, it is the knife of the Abyssinians." Rāfiʿ said: Then a camel that carries water fell into a well in Madinah, and it was slaughtered from the side of its shākilah, meaning its flank, and ʿUmar took a tenth of it for a dirham.
