حَدَّثَنَا الْمِقْدَامُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مَعْبَدٍ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ قَالَ

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى خَبَّابٍ أَعُودُهُ وَقَدِ اكْتَوَى فِي بَطْنِهِ سَبْعًا فَقَالَ خَبَّابٌ «لَوْلَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَهَى أَنْ نَدْعُوَ بِالْمَوْتِ لَدَعَوْتُ بِهِ أَلَا إِنَّ أَصْحَابَنَا مَضَوْا وَلَمْ يُصِيبُوا مِنَ الدُّنْيَا شَيْئًا أَلَا وَإِنَّا قَدْ أَصَبْنَا بَعْدَهُمْ حَتَّى لَمْ نَجِدْ لَهُ مَوْضِعًا إِلَّا فِي التُّرَابِ إِنَّ الْمَرْءَ يُؤْجَرُ فِي نَفَقَتِهِ كُلِّهَا إِلَّا فِي شَيْءٍ يَجْعَلُهُ فِي هَذَا التُّرَابِ» قَالَ «وَهُوَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَبْنِي حَائِطًا لَهُ»

✧ I entered upon Khabbab to visit him, and he had cauterized himself seven times in his belly. Khabbab said, “Were it not that the Prophet ﷺ forbade us to pray for death, I would have prayed for it. Indeed, our companions passed on and did not attain anything of this world. But we have attained after them, until we find no place for it except in the dust. A person is rewarded for all his spending, except for something he puts into this dust.” He said, “And at that time he was building a wall for himself.”
