✧ When the people dispersed, I accompanied a people whose company was not more beloved to me than theirs. We traveled along the bank of a canal, and a mosque was visible to us. In it there was a man. When he saw the forelocks of the horses, he came out in alarm, dragging his garment. Our commander said to him, “Why are you alarmed?” He said, “You have frightened me.” He said, “It is ʿAbd Allah b. Khabbab.” Our commander said to him, “Narrate to us a hadith you heard from your father, narrating from the Messenger of God ﷺ.” He narrated from his father that the Messenger of God ﷺ mentioned a trial: “The one sitting in it is better than the one standing, and the one standing in it is better than the one walking, and the one walking in it is better than the one running. If it reaches you, then be the servant of God who is killed.” He said, “They brought him to the bank of the canal and slaughtered him. I saw his blood flowing in the water like a strap, not dispersing.” He said, “Then they took the mother of his child and killed her; she was pregnant, and they ripped open her belly. I never accompanied a people more hateful to me than them, until I found an opportunity to slip away and escaped.”
