✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ said: God ﷻ commanded Yahya b. Zakariyya with five words, to act upon them and to command the Children of Israel to act upon them. He was delaying, so 'Isa said to him: You have been commanded with five words, to act upon them and to command the Children of Israel to know them; either you command them with them, or I stand up and command them with them. Yahya said: If you precede me with them, I fear that I will be punished or swallowed by the earth. So he gathered the Children of Israel in Bayt al-Maqdis until the mosque was full and people sat on the balconies. He admonished the people, then said: God commanded me with five words, to act upon them and to command you to act upon them. The first of them is that you associate nothing with God, for whoever associates anything with God, his likeness is like a man who bought a slave from his pure wealth with gold or silver, and said: This is my house and my work, so render your work. But he began working and rendering his work to other than his master. Which of you would love to have a slave like that, rendering his work to other than his master? God ﷻ created you and provided for you, so do not associate anything with God. God commanded you with prayer, so when you set your faces, do not turn away, for God ﷻ sets His face toward the face of His servant when he stands praying, and He does not turn His face away from him until the servant himself turns away. He commanded you with fasting, for the likeness of the fasting person is like a man with a pouch of musk among a band, none of whom has musk besides him, and all of them desire to find its scent. The scent of the fasting person's mouth is sweeter to God than the scent of musk. He commanded you with charity, for its likeness is like a man whom the enemy seized and captured, tied his hand to his neck, and brought him forward to strike his neck. He said: Do not kill me, for I ransom myself from you with such and such wealth. So they released him, and he began collecting for them until he ransomed himself. Thus is charity: the servant ransoms himself from God's punishment. He commanded you with much remembrance of God, and the likeness of that is like a man whom the enemy wronged, and they went swiftly in pursuit of him. He fled until he came to a strong fortress and secured himself in it. Likewise is the likeness of Satan: servants do not secure themselves from him except by the remembrance of God.
