حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ أَنَا خَالِدٌ عَنْ خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّاءِ عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَاطِبٍ أَنَّ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ حَاطِبٍ ذَكَرَ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ فَقَالَ
طَالَمَا حَرَصَ عَلَى الْإِمَارَةِ قُلْنَا وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِلِصٍّ وَأَمَرَ بِقَتْلِهِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّهُ سَرَقَ فَقَالَ «اقْطَعُوهُ» ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِهِ بَعْدُ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَقَدْ سَرَقَ وَقَدْ قُطِعَتْ قَوَائِمُهُ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ مَا أَجِدُ لَكَ شَيْئًا إِلَّا مَا قَضَى فِيكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ أَمَرَ بِقَتْلِكَ فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ أَعْلَمَ بِكَ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِقَتْلِهِ أُغَيْلِمَةً مِنْ أَبْنَاءِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ أَنَا فِيهِمْ فَقَالَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ أَمِّرُونِي عَلَيْنَا ثُمَّ انْطَلَقْنَا بِهِ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ

✧ How often he was eager for command. We said, 'And what is that?' He said, 'A thief was brought to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he ordered his execution. It was said to him, "He only stole." He said, "Cut off his hand." Then later he was brought to Abu Bakr, after he had stolen and his limbs had been cut off. Abu Bakr ؓ said, "I find nothing for you except what the Messenger of God ﷺ decreed concerning you on the day he ordered your execution, for he was more knowledgeable about you." Then he ordered his execution by a group of young boys from the sons of the Muhajirun, among whom I was. Ibn al-Zubayr said, "Put me in command over us." Then we set off with him.' And he mentioned the hadith.
