حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الطُّوسِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا الزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الضَّحَّاكِ الْحِزَامِيُّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ قَامَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ عَلَى مِنْبَرِ الْكُوفَةِ حِينَ اخْتَلَفَ الْحَكَمَانِ فَقَالَ «قَدْ كُنْتُ نَهَيْتُكُمْ
عَنْ هَذِهِ الْحُكُومَةِ فَعَصَيْتُمُونِي» فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ فَتًى آدَمُ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ وَاللهِ مَا نَهَيْتَنَا وَلَكِنَّكَ أَمَرْتَنَا وَدمَّرْتَنَا فَلَمَّا كَانَ فِيهَا مَا تَكْرَهُ بَرَّأَتَ نَفْسَكَ وَنَحَلْتَنَا ذَنْبَكَ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ ؓ «وَمَا أَنْتَ وَهَذَا الْكَلَامُ قَبَّحَكَ اللهُ وَاللهِ لَقَدْ كَانَتِ الْجَمَاعَةُ فَكُنْتَ فِيهَا خَامِلًا فَلَمَّا ظَهَرَتِ الْفِتْنَةُ نَجَّمْتَ فِيهَا نُجُومَ قَرْنِ الْمَاعِزَةِ» ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ «لِلَّهِ مَنْزِلٌ نَزَلَهُ سَعْدُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ وَاللهِ لَئِنْ كَانَ ذَنْبًا إِنَّهُ لَصَغِيرٌ مَغْفُورٌ وَلَئِنِ كَانَ حَسَنًا إِنَّهُ لَعَظِيمٌ مَشْكُورٌ»

✧ "You disobeyed me concerning this arbitration." A dark-complexioned youth stood up to him and said: "By God, you did not forbid us; rather, you commanded us and destroyed us. When something you disliked happened, you absolved yourself and saddled us with your sin." 'Ali ؓ said to him: "What have you to do with this speech? May God disfigure you! By God, there was a community and you were insignificant in it. When the strife appeared, you emerged in it like the horns of a goat." Then he turned to the people and said: "For God is the standing of Sa'd b. Malik and 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar. By God, if it was a sin, it is small and forgiven; and if it was a good deed, it is great and appreciated."
