✧ "The wretched one is he who was wretched in his mother's womb, and the fortunate one is he who was fortunate in his mother's womb." He said: So I went to Ḥudhayfah b. Asīd, one of the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and said: 'How strange is the saying of Ibn Umm ʿAbd: The wretched one is he who was wretched in his mother's womb.' He said: Ḥudhayfah said to me: 'And what amazes you about that, O Abū al-Ṭufayl? Shall I not inform you of this from wretchedness?' And he raised the hadith: 'An angel is entrusted with the womb for forty-some nights. When God wants to create what He wills, by God's permission, he says: O Lord, male or female? Your Lord decrees and the angel writes. Then he says: O Lord, wretched or fortunate? Your Lord decrees and the angel writes. Then he says: O Lord, what is its term? Your Lord decrees and the angel writes. Then it is folded, neither increased nor decreased.'
