حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا مُصَرِّفُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْيَامِيُّ ثنا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ثنا مُجَالِدٌ عَنْ عَامِرٍ عَنْ صِلَةَ بْنِ زُفَرَ قَالَ
قُلْنَا لِحُذَيْفَةَ كَيْفَ عَرَفْتَ أَمْرَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ وَلَمْ يَعْرِفْهُ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَلَا عُمَرُ ؓ ؟ قَالَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَنَامَ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ فَسَمِعْتُ نَاسًا مِنْهُمْ يَقُولُونَ لَوْ طَرَحْنَاهُ عَنْ رَاحِلَتِهِ فَانْدَقَّتْ عُنُقُهُ فاسْتَرَحْنَا مِنْهُ فَسِرْتُ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَهُ وَجَعَلْتُ أَقْرَأُ وَأَرْفَعُ صَوْتِي فَانْتَبَهَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «مَنْ هَذَا؟» فَقُلْتُ حُذَيْفَةُ قَالَ «مَنْ هَؤُلَاءِ؟» قُلْتُ فُلَانٌ وَفُلَانٌ حَتَّى عَدَدْتُهُمْ قَالَ «أَوَسَمِعْتَ مَا قَالُوا؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ؛ وَلِذَلِكَ سِرْتُ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُمْ قَالَ «فَإِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ فُلَانًا وَفُلَانًا حَتَّى عَدَّ أَسْمَاءَهُمْ مُنافِقُونَ لَا تُخْبِرَنَّ أَحَدًا»

✧ We said to Hudhayfah: How did you know the affair of the hypocrites when none of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ knew it—not Abu Bakr or Umar ؓ? He said: I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he fell asleep on his mount. I heard some people among them saying, “If we threw him off his mount, his neck would break and we would be rid of him.” So I rode between them and him, and I began to recite [Qur’an] and raise my voice. The Prophet ﷺ woke up and said, “Who is this?” I said, “Hudhayfah.” He said, “Who are these?” I said, “So-and-so and so-and-so,” until I had listed them. He said, “Did you hear what they said?” I said, “Yes; that is why I rode between you and them.” He said, “These—so-and-so and so-and-so,” until he listed their names—“are hypocrites. Do not inform anyone.”
