✧ I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his illness in which he was taken, and Fāṭimah ؓ was at his head. She wept until her voice rose. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his gaze to her and said, “My beloved Fāṭimah, what makes you weep?” She said, “I fear loss after you.” He said, “O my beloved, do you not know that Allah, may He be glorified, looked upon the earth one look and chose your father from it, and sent him with His message? Then He looked another look and chose your husband from it, and revealed to me that I should marry you to him. O Fāṭimah, we are a household to whom Allah has given seven qualities not given to anyone before us, nor given to anyone after us: I am the seal of the prophets and the most honorable of the prophets before Allah and the most beloved of creation to Allah, may He be glorified, and I am your father. My successor is the best of successors and the most beloved of them to Allah, and he is your husband. Our martyr is the best of martyrs and the most beloved of them to Allah, and he is your paternal uncle Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and he is the uncle of your father and the uncle of your husband. Among us is one who has two green wings, flying in Paradise with the angels wherever he wishes, and he is the cousin of your father and the brother of your husband. Among us are the two grandsons of this community, and they are your two sons, al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, and they are the masters of the youth of the people of Paradise. Their father, by the One who sent me with the truth, is better than them. O Fāṭimah, by the One who sent me with the truth, from them is the Mahdī of this community when the world becomes chaos and confusion, tribulations appear, ways are cut off, and they raid one another, no elder shows mercy to a child and no child honors an elder. Then Allah, may He be glorified, will send from them at that time one who conquers the fortresses of misguidance and sealed hearts, who will uphold the religion at the end of time as I upheld it at the beginning of time, and will fill the earth with justice as it was filled with oppression. O Fāṭimah, do not grieve and do not weep, for Allah, may He be glorified, is more merciful and more compassionate to you than I, because of your place with me and your position in my heart. Allah married you to your husband, and he is the noblest of your household in lineage, the most generous of them in standing, the most merciful of them to the people, the most just of them in equity, and the most discerning of them in judgment. I asked my Lord, may He be glorified, that you be the first of my household to join me.” ʿAlī ؓ said, “When the Prophet ﷺ was taken, Fāṭimah ؓ remained after him only seventy-five days until Allah joined her to him ﷺ.”
