✧ I heard my grandfather, Abu Qirsafah, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying: The beginning of my Islam was that I was an orphan between my mother and my maternal aunt. I inclined more toward my maternal aunt, and I used to tend some little sheep of mine. My maternal aunt would often say to me: “O my son, do not pass by this man”—meaning the Prophet ﷺ—“lest he lead you astray and misguide you.” I would go out until I reached the pasture, leave my little sheep, then go to the Prophet ﷺ and remain with him listening to him. Then I would return with my sheep lean and with dry udders. My maternal aunt said to me: “What is wrong with your sheep? Their udders are dry.” I said: “I do not know.” Then I returned to him on the second day, and he did as he had done the first day, except that I heard him say: “O people, emigrate and hold fast to Islam, for emigration does not cease as long as jihad continues.” Then I returned with my sheep as I had returned the first day. Then I returned to him on the third day, and I remained with the Prophet ﷺ listening to him until I embraced Islam, pledged allegiance to him, and shook his hand. I complained to him about my maternal aunt and about my sheep. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: “Bring me the sheep.” I brought them to him, and he wiped their backs and their udders and prayed for blessing in them, and they became full of fat and milk. When I entered upon my maternal aunt with them, she said: “O my son, graze them like this.” I said: “O aunt, I did not graze them except where I used to graze every day, but I will tell you my story.” I told her the story and that I had gone to the Prophet ﷺ, and I told her about his conduct and his words. Then my mother and my maternal aunt said: “Take us to him.” So I, my mother, and my maternal aunt went, and they embraced Islam and pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but they did not shake hands. This is how Abu Qirsafah’s Islam and his emigration to the Prophet ﷺ came about. Ziyad said: “Abu Qirsafah used to live in the land of Tihamah.”
