✧ Abu ‘Abd Allah went early to al-Kunasah to buy a riding beast, and a mawla of his went with him. He stood at a side of the market, and beasts began passing by him. A horse passed by and pleased him, so he said to his mawla: ‘Go buy that horse.’ His mawla went and offered its owner three hundred dirhams for it, but the owner refused to sell it. He haggled with him, but the owner refused to sell it. He said: ‘Will you come to a friend of ours at a side of the market?’ He said: ‘I don’t mind.’ So they went to him. His mawla said to him: ‘I offered this man three hundred dirhams for his horse, but he refused and claimed it is worth more than that.’ The owner of the horse said: ‘He spoke the truth, may Allah set you right. Do you think that is a proper price?’ He said: ‘No, your horse is worth more than that. You would sell it for five hundred—’ until it reached seven hundred or eight hundred dirhams. When the man left, he turned to his mawla and said: ‘Woe to you! You went to buy me a beast. A man’s beast pleased me, so I sent you to buy it, and you came back leading a man from the Muslims while he was saying, “What do you think? What do you think?” And I gave allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to give sincere counsel to every Muslim.’
