✧ I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for part of the day when some people came, most of them from Mudar, rather all of them from Mudar, clad in striped woolen cloaks, with swords hanging from their necks. I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ change when he saw the hardship they were in. Then he said: “O Bilal, hasten the prayer.” When he prayed, he sat for a while, praised Allah Almighty and extolled Him, then said: “Fear Allah, by whom you ask one another, and the wombs; indeed Allah is ever watchful over you.” He said: “May Allah have mercy on a man who gives charity from his dinar and dirham and a sa' of his dates,” until he reduced charity to half a date. Among those who stood was a man from the Ansar with a purse that his hand could barely hold, or indeed could not hold, not knowing whether it was gold or silver. Then the people followed one another until they gathered two huge heaps of food and clothing. I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ brighten as if it were gilded. When the charity was concluded, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There is no one among my nation who establishes a good practice that is acted upon after him except that he has its reward and the like of the reward of those who establish his practice, without any decrease in their rewards. And whoever introduces an evil practice in Islam that is acted upon after him except that upon him is its burden and the like of the burdens of those who establish his practice, without any decrease in their burdens.”
